Mugen Depth Guide - Eternal Palace Sakura Risk Meter

What Mugen Depth does in Eternal Palace Sakura, what raises it, Depth Effects, and how Sakura Rooms lower depth—sourced from Steam and walkthroughs.

Mugen Depth is the run-long pressure gauge in Eternal Palace Sakura. Steam’s store copy frames it as deliberate risk: power you take during a run makes the labyrinth harder to survive. This page explains what the meter is, what sources say raises and lowers it, and what we still cannot confirm.

What is Mugen Depth on the map HUD?

The English UI label Mugen Depth appears on the branching map, alongside a counter such as Until Depth Effect: N—how many depth points remain before the next Depth Effect (深度効果) applies, per English coverage of the Japanese term.

In one official Steam screenshot, Retla stands on Area 1 / Sakura Pavilion / Floor 5 with Mugen Depth: 47 and Until Depth Effect: 8. The same HUD also shows EC currency (186 in that shot).

Japanese footage shows the same mechanic with different numbers: 夢幻深度 6 and 深度効果付与まであと 21 on Area 1, Floor 2.

What raises Mugen Depth?

Sources agree that depth is not a passive timer—you increase it by progressing and taking rewards.

Action What sources say Source
Moving to another room on the map Depth rises when you commit to the next node GameWith walkthrough; NoobFeed review; Vulgar Knight review
Treasure room (宝の間) rewards Taking attribute or Arts-style rewards from treasure rooms adds depth GameWith walkthrough
Break Room (休憩部屋) healing Recovering HP in a rest room also raises depth GameWith walkthrough; NoobFeed (Break Room / choice room)
General map actions Walkthrough text groups “actions on the map” with depth gain GameWith walkthrough
Backtracking over explored tiles One English review states that retreating across tiles you already cleared increases depth NoobFeed review (single source)
Shop purchases Review notes you can buy modifiers that change how fast depth climbs NoobFeed review (single source)

GameWith’s author run gives concrete Depth Effect examples tied to rising depth: enemy HP increases, enemy attack increases, higher shop prices, and a narrower field of view. Those are examples from one playthrough, not a promise that every run sees the same order.

Steam’s overview still describes the core trade: the deeper you go, the more dangerous the palace becomes—aligned with enemy scaling mentioned across GameWith, NoobFeed, and store marketing.

What do high Depth and Depth Effects do?

Depth Effects are the negative side of the meter—buffs to enemies and debuffs or penalties on Retla that stack as depth climbs.

From the GameWith walkthrough (combat-focused examples):

  • Enemies gain more HP and attack as depth rises.
  • Non-combat examples from the same source include shop price inflation and reduced visibility (field of view).

NoobFeed emphasizes that the system punishes greedy routing: even healing can cost you later depth, and backtracking can still inch the meter up. That matches the “risk/reward” pitch on the Steam store page without treating any single reviewer comment as a complete ruleset.

How can you lower Mugen Depth?

Sakura Room (桜の間)

The Japanese walkthrough and NoobFeed both describe Sakura Rooms as the main relief valve: you spend HP to lower Mugen Depth and/or clear Depth Effect stacks applied during the run. NoobFeed also notes healing tied to the cherry-tree area in Sakura rooms, while warning that heavy depth can make even a large heal a net loss—again, one reviewer’s framing, not a verified formula.

We could not find an official screenshot of the Sakura Room, so its layout and exact HP costs are not verified here.

Shrine nodes

NoobFeed mentions Shrines that can restore HP or wipe Mugen Depth entirely. That room type is not named in the GameWith room table we rely on for Japanese walkthrough coverage, so treat Shrines as single-source (English review only) until a second source or in-game capture confirms them.

Long-term relief between runs lives in Sakura Trials—milestones that unlock Arts, stats, and packs—not in resetting Mugen Depth permanently mid-run.

Does the gauge hard-cap at 100?

GameWith states that the UI gauge tops out at 100, but Depth Effect debuffs keep stacking past that display. Read the number as a visual cap, not proof that penalties stop at 100.

If you are routing a fragile build, plan Sakura Room visits before shop or combat spikes rather than assuming “100” means you are safe.

FAQ

What is Mugen Depth?
Mugen Depth (Japanese UI: 夢幻深度) is a run-wide depth counter shown on the map HUD. Steam markets it as a risk-reward system: getting stronger during a run also raises future danger. Higher depth is linked to tougher enemies and Depth Effects on the player.
Does Mugen Depth stop at 100?
The on-screen gauge is displayed up to 100, but the GameWith walkthrough states that Depth Effect debuffs continue to stack even after the gauge reads 100. Treat 100 as a UI display limit, not a hard gameplay stop.
How do I lower Mugen Depth?
GameWith and NoobFeed describe Sakura Rooms (桜の間) where you trade HP to reduce depth and clear applied Depth Effect stacks. An English review also mentions Shrine nodes that can restore HP or wipe Mugen Depth, but Shrine naming is not confirmed in the Japanese walkthrough we used.
Is there a full list of Depth Effects?
Not verified yet. Official screenshots only show example counters (such as Mugen Depth 47 with Until Depth Effect 8). GameWith lists a few effects from one author run; we do not have an official numbered table of every Depth Effect name and threshold.
